Ruth Maher showed her versatility when she sang the important role of Fenena, Nabucco’s daughter, in the Verdi opera, which was being revived that season. The Turkish soprano Ozglu Tanyeri was making her debut with the society as Abigaille but despite her impressive CV disappointed vocally. By contrast, the Spanish-born baritone Pedro Farres gave a tour-de-force performance as Nabucco, displaying a vibrant and resilient voice and acting ability above the ordinary. Lino Savoldi,. who had already sung Calaf successfully with the society, coped impressively with Ismaele’s music.
